Anne Helen Mydland holds an MA degree from Bergen Academy of Arts and Design (2000), and has since worked as both artist, curator and teacher. She is the co-founder and member of the artist and curator group TEMP. Mydland has been widely exhibited both nationally and internationally and has been purchased by the leading institutions such as National Museum of contemporary art in Norway (Museet for samtidskunst), Norsk Kulturråd og VK.
Mydland works with a basis in clay and ceramic material, in a contemporary art practice. She works with installation, sculpture, (ceramic) print and site-specific projects, specialised in the use of ready-mades and object culture. She also has collaborative work with industry, e.g. Bratsberg Teglverk (brickfacotry) and Porsgrunn Porcelain Factory.

Artistic Research Focus
Mydland's artistic research is questioning the object's role, status and value. Methodicly juxtaposing the objects private and public history, different hierarchies of value and class become evident. In montages and installations both using found objects and modelled sculptural elements she is exploring the different ways we use and relate to objects, both as cultural signifiers and personal souvenirs.
Artistic Research Project
"Topographies of the Obsolete: Exploring the Site Specific and Associated Histories of Post-Industry"
A forthcoming Artistic Research project (KU Project) at Bergen Academy of Art and Design (KHiB).
It is a project in collaboration with partner universities/institutions in Denmark, Germany and the UK. Our main collaborative partner is the British Ceramics Biennial that invited KHiB to work in the closed Spode factory in Stoke-on-Trent as well as participation and the possibility to be a main artistic contribution in the forthcoming Biennial in 2013.
The focus of the project is on the landscape of post industry, explored through artistic research projects taking its point of departure in workshops/residencies in the closed Spode Factory site in Stoke-on-Trent. This site offers multi-faceted scope for creative interpretation through its socio-economic histories, industrial architecture, production and material remnants.
The first residency 'Resurrecting the Obsolete' in September 2012 with 33 invited interdisciplinary artists/participants accumulated individual artistic projects from which the project now is developing. The artistic strategies encompassed mapping the site through various media, object appropriation and re-contextualisation, lens-based work through to performative gesture. Through further periods of artistic research and development both on site and in the institutions, the distinct and interconnected strands of discourse identified below will form the core discourse of the project. These topics are considered more as questions and relevant starting-points of the discussion in terms of highlighting the project in established strands of theory and contemporary art contexts. The project will need to address the validity or actuality in the different approaches to establish/investigate if these familiar strands are relevant and have a potential for new understanding/knowledge.

The methodology of the overriding project is based on the rhetoric method of identifying 'a landscape' and different 'topi' ensuring a multi perspective approach. This possibility is suited for the multiplicity of the project and giving it a methodological rigour. This method will develop through discussion, friction and negotiating with the individual artistic methods and strategies used by the individual researcher/artist.

Innovative aspect of the Project
The innovative aspect of this project is particularly evident in the exploration of what is, and how can, ceramic and clay be understood as a material and medium in contemporary art practice. In honing in on the particular history and the particularities of this site as well as the breadth and in depth exploration of the site/strategies a more nuanced approach to the landscape of the post industry can arise. For KHiB it is an exploration of the new possibilities of the new structure of the Department of Art and the goal of making KU/artistic research the core of what we do and how the institution is built. How to develop methods for research based teaching and larger inter-institutional and international research projects. We actively work with this as a recruitment strategy for a research fellow position, as well as ensuring a strong artistic research environment for the candidate. This project includes interdisciplinary staff and students from KHiB, and our partner institutions. We ensure the discourse to develop in KU groups, reading and tutorial groups, trough seminars in KHiB and our partner institutions as well as through the participation in The British Ceramics Biennial, our first milestone for the dissemination of the artworks produced. Seminars, blogs, courses, exhibitions, biennial, symposia and a series of publications will create the project´s public interface and documentation.

"The object as storyteller has been a recurring feature of my work for several years. I have focused in particular on figurines/porcelain figures and have used ready-mades (china in particular) used in everyday settings. Porcelain and ceramic is closely linked to the family's stories through its use at family gatherings and home decoration. I explore the objects narrative potential with combinations of concepts and theory, mainly; religious: the symbols of the sacred, souvenirs and fetishism."
